Makena Road to Ahihi Cove Kanahena Cove, also known as Ahihi Cove, is part of the Ahihi-Kina’u Natural Area Reserve and located just south of Ahihi Bay. This small cove has no sandy beach and is very rocky. It is however one of the best snorkeling spots for fish and live coral. As soon as you lay down in the water It is like being in an aquarium. You will find many varieties of tropical fish here. The further out you swim the larger the fish get (but less fish). The cove is filled with live coral and very shallow at times with very few places to stand. At the concrete slab lay down and float out over the coral. It does get deeper further out but with less fish and stronger current.

There is parking for 4 cars on the left side of the road. Most people park further down the road and follow the road back.

If you do decide to snorkel here, please do with caution, as storm swells can make it rough and too shallow. It is best to check with locals or a dive shop to get the latest weather conditions.

The coral is being ruined by tourists, who along with their children, walk all over the coral.this is permanently damaging it. The cove is not recommended for children or poor swimmers. standing on the coral not only kills it can also cause great injury as some coral species are very poisonous.
